The titlescreen music was made in FLStudio using a step sequencer and some 8-bit VSTs.
For this project I aimed to represent myself by encapsulating myself within "the machine". When I looked around for a conceptual object to represent myself with, I realized that I had very few possessions. I do not have toys, I do not have trinkets, there are no physical novelties that I covet. Thinking about this further I realized most of the activity in my life revolves around digital technology and gaming. The "meta"; the non-physical; the digital, is what I value most.
The visuals pay homage to Metroid. I remixed the original Metroid title screen to include a pixelized portrait of myself, and changed the title to the nickname I have held for years and years: "Johnny". This helped to represent myself as a character, within the confines of a game, abstracted from my physical reality.
The game Metroid is an experience of solitude. Because of all the time spent absorbed in games and technologies, I have come to enjoy my "quiet time".
Lastly I decided to put the two elements together on my Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS is a portable gaming system, which is significant in the fact that it allows me to take my virtual experiences with me. I tend to always be carrying some sort of digital device with me, because without them I just wouldn't be me.
